Run Along

5.5 4 Ryan

November 13, 2007 · Leave a Comment

It’s been over a week since Ryan Shay collapsed during the Olympic Marathon Trails and later passed away. I wasn’t a Ryan fan in anyway, but reading tributes to him brings tears to my eyes.

Ryan’s death hasn’t been completely explained; though we do know it was related to his enlarge heart condition. Other runners that have had heart attacks during marathons are often old enough to be his father and are novice runners. Ryan was a young runner with an impressive resume. Still full of potential. He’s loss has really shocked the distance running world.

This Saturday (November 17th) we can show our support to Ryan’s family and friends by dedicating a 5.5 mile run (or a 5.5 mile portion of our run) to the memory of Ryan. That’s the distance at which he collapsed in the Marathon Trials. It seems like such a simple thing to do, but it may bring some sort of comfort to those that feel the loss.
